How to Replace the Cabin Air Filter
Replacing the cabin air filter on most MQB VW Group vehicles is a 5–10 minute DIY job - no tools required. The instructions below apply to VW Golf VII, Jetta Mk7, Audi A3 (8V) and similarly designed models.
-
Open and drop the glove box
Open the glove box fully. Squeeze both sides inward while pulling the door down - this releases the stop tabs and allows the glove box to drop further, exposing the filter housing on the HVAC unit behind it.
-
Remove the filter cover
Locate the rectangular plastic cover on the HVAC housing. Press the two release tabs on the left and right sides and pull the cover straight out toward you.
-
Slide out the old filter
Grip the old filter and pull it straight out. Take note of the airflow direction arrow printed on the filter frame - you must install the new filter in the same orientation.
-
Clean the housing (optional)
Use a dry cloth or a quick puff of compressed air to remove any loose dust or debris from inside the filter cavity before installing the new filter.
-
Insert the new filter
Slide the new 5Q0-819-669 filter into the housing, following the airflow arrow direction. Ensure the filter seats fully flush - it should not protrude or sit at an angle.
-
Reassemble the glove box
Snap the filter cover back into place (you should hear a click). Lift the glove box up and push it in until the stop tabs lock. Test the A/C at max fan speed to confirm normal airflow.
Signs of a Clogged Filter
-
Weak or reduced airflow
Noticeably less air from vents even at maximum fan speed
-
Musty or mildew smell
Unpleasant odor when the heater or A/C is running — especially at start-up
-
Windshield fogs faster
Defrost takes longer than usual — HVAC system struggles to clear glass
-
Increased cabin dust
More dust accumulating on dashboard and interior surfaces
-
HVAC noise / whistling
Blower motor works harder and may produce unusual sounds
Replacement Intervals
Always follow the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual. Some VW Group models display a service reminder in the instrument cluster when the cabin filter is due.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 5Q0-819-669 and 5Q0 819 644 A?
5Q0-819-669 (also written as 5Q0819669) is the current active OEM part number. The 5Q0 819 644 A is an older number that has been superseded — both refer to the same cabin air filter. If your vehicle originally used 5Q0 819 644 A or 5Q0 819 653, the correct replacement today is 5Q0-819-669.
Is MANN-FILTER CUK 26 009 a direct replacement for 5Q0-819-669?
Yes. MANN-FILTER CUK 26 009 (activated carbon) and CU 26 009 (particulate) are both confirmed direct equivalents for OEM 5Q0-819-669. MANN's own catalog lists VW OE numbers 5Q0 819 653, JZW 819 653 G, 5Q0 819 644, 5Q0 819 644 A, and 5Q0 819 669 as direct cross-references for CUK 26 009.
How long does it take to replace the cabin air filter on a VW Golf VII?
Approximately 5–10 minutes, and no tools are required. Open the glove box, squeeze the sides to drop it down, remove the filter housing cover, pull out the old filter, install the new 5Q0-819-669 in the correct airflow direction, and reassemble. The full procedure is described in the installation guide above.
Does the activated carbon filter help reduce allergies?
Yes. The activated carbon layer in OEM 5Q0-819-669 and its equivalents (such as MANN CUK 26 009) is specifically designed to capture pollen, dust, diesel soot, and some gaseous pollutants. This makes it effective at reducing allergy symptoms for cabin occupants. For maximum benefit during allergy season, replace the filter annually and use the A/C recirculation mode in high-pollen conditions.
Can I use 5Q0-819-669 in my Audi A3 (8V)?
Yes. The Audi A3 (8V generation, 2012–2020), S3 and RS3 all share the MQB platform with the VW Golf VII and use the same cabin air filter housing. OEM part 5Q0-819-669 is confirmed compatible. Always verify using your full VIN to account for production date and market-specific variations.
What happens if I don't replace the cabin air filter?
A heavily clogged filter restricts airflow through the HVAC system, reducing heating and air-conditioning performance. The blower motor works harder (increasing wear and energy use), windows fog more easily, odors accumulate in the cabin, and allergen levels increase. In extreme cases, a blocked filter can contribute to blower motor failure — a much more expensive repair than a simple filter replacement.
