Why your VIN matters
Your vehicle identification number (VIN) identifies your car down to the exact production run — engine, trim, and options included. Two cars with the same make, model, and year can still need different parts. The VIN is what removes the guesswork.

Where to look on your car
- Dashboard, driver's side — visible through the windshield where the dash meets the glass, near the corner closest to the driver's door.
- Driver's door jamb — open the door and check the sticker on the frame, usually below the latch.
- Engine bay — stamped on the block or on a plate near the front of the engine.
- Under the spare tire or trunk floor — some manufacturers stamp it into the frame under the carpet.
Where to look on your paperwork
- Vehicle registration or title.
- Insurance card or policy documents.
- Any previous service invoice or inspection report.
Reading your VIN
A VIN is always 17 characters — a mix of letters and numbers, never the letters I, O, or Q (they're excluded to avoid confusion with 1 and 0). If what you're looking at is shorter or contains those letters, you're probably reading a different number, like an engine or chassis code.
